Typewriter: Netflix Web Series Review

Typewriter - the latest Indian web series of Netflix belongs to the horror genre. One of the most renowned directors of Bollywood #SujoyGhosh (who has also directed the movies like #Kahaani, #Kahaani2, #Badla) directed this web series. The expectation level of the audience has been really high about the series. Will the series be able to fulfill the excitement among the viewers? Let's discuss about that.

Synopsis

Sujoy Ghosh's 'Typewriter' is based on a small town of Goa, Bardez. In the town, there lies a Villa which is unused for years. People say that the house is 'haunted'. A renowned ghost story writer Madhav Mathews (#KanwaljitSingh) once lived in that Villa with his family. The real story begins when Madhav Mathews ran out of ideas and he has to take help from other sources to get the new plots of his stories. Madhav Mathews died in that Villa while writing this book.

Madhav Mathews' granddaughter Jenny came to live in the 'Bardez Villa' after many years. An enthusiastic group of children tried to know the mystery of Bardez Villa. What happened to them? Will they be able to solve the mystery of Bardez Villa? You have to watch the web series to know the answers.

Direction

Sujoy Ghosh's 'Typewriter' has lots of promises, but it fails to live up to the expectation level of the audience. The first two episodes of this web series are engaging. The plot is set up nicely, but the last three episodes are way too predictable. The absence of the requisite twists and turns steals the suspense factor associated with such horror films. The biggest let down of the series is it's climax. It is solely made to give a message to the audience that season 2 will come in the future. The ending could have been better if the makers planned to keep it for a single season.

Technical Department

The cinematography and colour collection of the series are up to the mark. It creates the thrill at various moments throughout the whole series. However, the editing could have been better.

Music and Background Score

There are no songs in this web series which is appreciable. Otherwise, it could have affected the pace of the series. The background score matches with the theme of the series.

Performances

The biggest positive point of 'Typewriter' is the performance of the actors. #PurabKohli as Ravi Anand has done an excellent job as the police officer who is also the father of 'Sameera'. It has been a challenging role for him, both as a cop and a single father. The shades of this character have been portrayed brilliantly by #PurabKohli in this series.

The next name we should mention in this list is #JishuSengupta (Amit Roy). #JishuSengupta has been creating his own little space in Bollywood slowly. Maybe his screen presence was less than Purab Kohli; however, the importance of his character was immense in the series. #PalomiGhosh played the character of Jenny, the granddaughter of Madhav Mathews. She has also done her job quite well. #SameerKochhar's character did not get much importance in this season. However, in the next season, his character might get highlighted a bit as many questions about the character are still unanswered.

We should also praise the characters of the children in this series especially the girl who played the character of Sameera (#AarnaSharma) Their presence adds a 'feel-good' factor to the series.

WMR Verdict

'#Typewriter' is not like the other originals of Netflix; but it has paved its own way. You will not get bored while watching it because it's engaging; however, the edge-of-the-seat thriller component is missing for sure. '#Typewriter' is worth a watch if you love the horror genre and have ample amount of time in your hand. Otherwise, you can skip it as it doesn't belong to the must-watch category of Netflix originals.
