The storyline of the movie is certainly attractive as it's made on the life of the #mathematician #AnandKumar. The biopic of Anand Kumar has all the elements of becoming a successful film. The concept of 'Ab Raja Ka Beta Raja Nahi Banega; Ab Raja Wohi Banega Jo Haqdaar Hoga' is revolutionary in every aspect. Does this movie live up to the expectation level of the viewers? Let's try to understand...
The director #VikasBahl (known for popular movies like #Queen and #ChillarParty) gave an excellent start to the film. The young, enthusiastic, and brilliant student Anand Kumar gets an opportunity to go to Cambridge University to study as his article gets published in a foreign journal. It is certainly a great achievement for a young lad of #Bihar. Unfortunately, Anand Kumar is unable to visit #London due to financial crisis.
The situation worsens when his father dies and he has to sell 'Papad' to earn his livelihood. At this juncture, Anand Kumar meets Lallan and his life changes completely. How does Lallan uplift Anand? Does he have an ulterior motive? Does he genuinely care about Anand Kumar? Why does Anand feel the need to start the Super 30 group? Is the journey ahead easy for Anand Kumar? The answers to all these questions form the crux of the movie.
The first half of the film is quite engaging. In fact, the scene just before the intermission has been portrayed in quite an inspirational manner. Special credit should be given to #MukeshChabra, the casting director of this film. The students who were selected for the film have done a fabulous job. However, the film loses its plot completely in the second half. It is just reduced to a fight between the educational mafias and Anand Kumar. The focus of the film shifts to this subplot which might not be able to keep the audience intrigued. The context of rich vs. poor could have been shown in a better way. The English dramatization of the cult film '#Sholay' by the students of the '#Super30' batch looks overcooked.
The performance of the lead character #HrithikRoshan can be considered as one of the best performances in the career of the star actor. He had devoted 2.5 years to play the character
of Anand Kumar, and his efforts are clearly visible on the screen. However, the Bihari accent does not seem natural to him (After 5-10 minutes of the film, you will be accustomed to that). Even the look of Hrithik in the film is nowhere close to that of the real life Anand Kumar. The makeup is also not up to the mark, but the devotion of Hrithik Roshan to the character is clearly evident.
The performance of the other actors is also quite remarkable. Pankaj Tripathi deserves a special mention in this case (Day by day this man is proving his worth in the Bollywood industry). He has been excellent in the role of the education minister of Bihar (Given a chance, he would have suited the role of Anand Kumar aptly. However, the film would not have garnered much audience in that case). The audience will certainly like his character on the big screen. #VirendraSaxena, who played the character of Anand Kumar's father, also did a fine job.
It was great to see #AdityaShrivastava (Remember officer Abhijeet from the TV series 'CID') in this film. He played the character of Lallan (an education mafia of Bihar) in this movie. #MrunalThakur, as the love interest of Anand Kumar, had nothing much to do in the film.
The film had all the elements to be a great film but due to lack of appropriate execution it remained only a 'good' film to watch out for. There are few mainstream movies based on the education system in Bollywood. 'Super 30' could have been a milestone in this aspect but the screenplay let the movie down. The movie seemed to be overcooked and over-dramatic at several places.
The cinematography of the film is praiseworthy. However, the editing could have been better. The movie is 2 hours and 42 minutes long. The second half is too long and some scenes could have been easily excluded. The music of the film is average, and the audience will not be able to keep it in their mind after leaving the hall.
The film ends on a good note with an emotional scene featuring Hrithik Roshan. However, the feel good factor seems quite lost in the journey of the second half.
WMR Verdict:
'Super 30' is a must watch film for all the fans of Hrithik Roshan. You will certainly enjoy the performance of the star actor on the screen. It also has a social message; but the film only glorifies the character of Anand Kumar. #VikasBahl has not been able to justify the great storyline completely on the screen and that can certainly affect the box office collection of the film. The film is currently facing competition with 'Kabir Singh' and '#Spiderman: Far from Home' at the box office, and in the next week it will have to overcome the challenge of 'The Lion King'. Will the film be able to have a successful run? Only time can tell this answer to you.
