Student of the Year 2: Movie Review

The first part of "#StudentOfTheYear" gave the Bollywood industry 3 superstars in the form of #VarunDhawan, #AliaBhatt, and #SiddarthMalhotra. Therefore, people had huge expectations from the second part of the franchise right from the time the trailer made its appearance.

Unfortunately, none of the lead stars could match the hype created by the protagonists in the first edition of this franchise. So, the million dollar question is why should people go or not go to watch it in theatres? Our review will enlighten you on the same question.

In 'Student Of The Year’ movie, the director pitted one girl against 2 boys. In this edition, we have 2 glam dolls (#TaraSutaria and #AnanyaPandey) vying for an athletic, muscular guy (#TigerShroff). In this movie, we see a school where a student does everything else apart from studying. In fact, the lead protagonists of the film clearly hinted during their movie promotions that one should not expect to see a natural school in the movie.

Saint Teresa is a fantasy school created by #Dharmaproductions (#KaranJohar), and everything about this school is exaggerated, unbelievable, pompous, and out of the world.

In ‘#StudentOfTheYear2’ there is absence of a proper storyline and repetitive sequences wear you off throughout the film. The lead character of the movie, Rohan (Tiger Shroff) gets admission in Saint Teresa School via a sports scholarship (nothing else would have seemed more believable as per the makers of the film).

Mridula (Tara Sutaria), Rohan's childhood friend, studies in the same school. However, their chemistry does not fructify in the school. Shreya (Ananya Pandey) is the daughter of a school trustee (similar to #RaniMukherjee who was the daughter of the principal in Kuch Kuch Hota Hain).

Shreya's brother Manav (#AdityaSeal) is consistently winning the Student of the year trophy for the past 2 years. He aims to win the trophy this year too. Guess who would be his toughest competitor? Yes, its none other than Rohan. Manav gets Rohan kicked out of Saint Teresa to nullify his competition.

Rohan goes back to his old school Pishori Lal. Herein comes a twist in the tale that will remind you of the film #JoJeetaWohiSikandar. The school authorities of Saint Teresa decide that the Student of the year trophy will be given to the winner of the Dignity Cup.

Does Manav complete a hat-trick by winning the coveted Student of the Year trophy or does Rohan foil his attempt? Do the glam dolls Shreya and Mridula also fight to win the Student of the Year trophy? Are there some surprises in store in the movie? The answers to all these questions form the crux of the movie.

The script is so predictable that just by watching the trailer you can hit a bullseye with who would win the Student of the year trophy in the end. (It requires no rocket science. In fact, it doesn't even require your brains to come to a conclusion).

Tiger Shroff is known for his dancing and acting skills, and he has been fabulous in both the departments in the movie. Unfortunately, the action sequences are repetitive and show nothing that you haven't witnessed before. Tiger Shroff has to work a lot on his expressions, especially in romantic scenes.

The lesser we talk about Tara Sutaria and Ananya Pandey, the better it is (They still have lot of ground to cover to make it big in Bollywood).

Aditya Seal tries to give his best in the sport sequences. The features of a spoiled brat and the attitude of the defending champion of 'Student Of The Year’ trophy are portrayed well on the screen by him (He will remind you of #DeepakTijori from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar).

The YouTuber #HarshBeniwal has also been introduced in the film. His character has added some comic relief to the otherwise boring and predictable film. Just as "Aata Majhi Satakli" dialogue is mouthed repeatedly by Singham, "Din Tera Hain,Saal Mera Hoga’ dialogue is uttered repeatedly by Tiger Shroff throughout the film.

Rohan and Mridula are shown to hail from middle-class families; however, the makers of the film have dressed them up so jazzily, that you assume that ACHCHE Dinn have finally come for the middle-class population.

The cinematography is quite good thankfully. The set designs are also perfect for this kind of movie. You will like some of the sport sequences (specially Kabaddi).

The music of 'Student Of The Year’ was quite good. Some of the songs like 'Ishq Wala Love’ or 'Radha’ might still be in your playlist. However, in the second part, the songs are average.

In the post credits scene we can witness 'Hook Up Song’ featuring Alia Bhatt and Tiger Shroff. The expressions and screen presence of Alia Bhatt are mesmerizing compared with those of the two glam girls in this film.

'Student Of The Year’ gave rise to three new stars in Bollywood. Can Ananya Pandey and Tara Sutaria follow their footsteps? Hopefully, we can find the answer in the near future.

Our Verdict:

'Student Of The Year 2’ fails to live up to the hype it created among youngsters. This film has a great potential to sink like Kalank. ‘Student Of The Year 2’ lacks a soul and there are heavy chances that the audience won't connect with the film. If you want to witness the real struggle of Indian students go and watch the TV series of TVF 'Kota Factory’ (it is available on YouTube for free). It will certainly be a better experience than wasting your time and money on this film.
