Saand Ki Aankh: Movie Review

#SaandKiAankh released this Diwali along with #Housefull4 and #MadeInChina. Does the film have enough firepower to withstand the competition posed by the other two films? Let’s analyse.

Synopsis

#SaandKiAankh is a story of two women from the Johri Village in Uttar Pradesh, namely #ChandraTomar and #PrakashiTomar who not only excelled in shooting at the National level but also inspired the next generation of our country to bring medals at the International level. The journey was not very smooth for the #ShooterDadis; however, they successfully won the battle against patriarchy in our society. In rural India, women are still seen as a child-producing factory. They don't have their own identity in the male-dominated society.

#ChandraTomar (#BhumiPedneker) and #PrakashiTomar (#TaapseePannu) went against this system to ensure that the next generation of girls do not suffer like them. Yashpal (#VineetKumarSingh), a local doctor, helps the #ShooterDadis in their efforts by creating a shooting range in the village. He helps them because he is aware that if anyone excels in the shooting sport it would be easy for the shooter to get a Government job.

#ChandraTomar, with her granddaughter Shefali (#SaraArjun), and Prakashi Tomar, with her daughter Seema (#PrithaBakshi), visit the shooting range to change their future against the rule of Rattan Singh Tomar (#Prakash Jha). What happens to their life after that? Do they get the support of other villagers, or do they have to fight this battle single-handedly? What difficulties they have to encounter in their quest for self-identity? Are they successful in changing the mind-set of the people around them? The answers to all these questions form the crux of the movie.

Direction

The debutant direct #TusharHiranandani made a good attempt in presenting the life story of #ChandraTomar and #PrakashiTomar on the big screen. The storyline was outright inspirational, and the director tried to give the biopic a commercial colour to make it more acceptable for the masses. The director was successful in painting the real essence of rural India before our eyes. Although the first half of the film is slightly slow, it picks up pace in the second half to end on a high note.

One area of the film that will disappoint you is the department of make-up and prosthetics. The make-up of both the lead actresses looked unconvincing. Also, the make-up was inconsistent in several shots throughout the movie. You cannot gamble with the make-up if your biopic requires your actresses to look like particular-aged females. A poorly-done make-up with inappropriate use of prosthetics gets magnified manifold on the big screen. This factor made it a little difficult for the audience to connect with the film.

The sequences wherein the protagonists escape from the house to take part in the shooting competitions were a bit repetitive and could have been made more interesting.

Technical Department

The cinematography of #SudhakarReddy was brilliant. The scene wherein #ChandraTomar comes with her granddaughter Shefali for the first time in the shooting yard and Yashpal sees them in the rear-view mirror of his bike looked brilliant on the big screen. In another scene, a drone view shows several women busy working in the field and the #ShooterDadis practising with their grandchildren right in the middle of the field. The contrast was shown excellently.

The screenplay of the film could have been better. The dialogues written by #JagdeepSidhu are hard-hitting and precise. The movie could have been easily trimmed by 10−15 minutes to make it crisper for the audience.

Music and Background Score

#VishalMishra's music was decent enough for the film. The song '#UdtaTeetar' in the powerful voice of #SunidhiChauhan went well with the theme of the movie. The background music was also very engaging.

Performances

The best part of #SaandKiAankh is the performance of the lead cast. Both #TaapseePannu and #BhumiPedneker have given their best to portray the characters of Tomar Dadis on the big screen. Their efforts are certainly commendable. Both the actresses have hit the bull’s eye as far as acting is concerned, be it with the dialogue delivery or with their body language. It won’t be an overstatement to say that their performances in the film can be rated as one of the career-best performances of their lives. Taapsee and Bhumi’s onscreen chemistry is a treat to watch.

#VineetKumarSingh was at his usual best. He is one of the most underrated actors of Bollywood. The guy has tremendous potential. #PrakashJha did a fine job in the film. The supporting cast including #ShaadRandhawa as Rambir Tomar, #HimanshuSharma as Sachin Tomar, #NavneetSreevastava as Farooq, and #NikhatKhan as Maharani Mahendra Kumari put up a good performance in this film.

WMR Verdict

#SaandKiAankh is not a flawless film, and it is not even one of the best sports dramas made in Bollywood. In spite of that, the film presents an inspiring story of #ChandraTomar and #PrakashiTomar that every Indian should know. #SaandKiAankh is definitely worth watching with your family in this festive season of Diwali. We can guarantee that you will be inspired and leave the hall with a broad smile on your face.
