Synopsis
#MitinMashi is an iconic detective character created by Bengali novelist #SuchitraBhattacharya, and this character is presented for the first time on the big screen by the filmmaker #ArindamSil. The movie is based on the story #HateMatroTinteDin.
Rustom Jariwala’s eight-year-old child is kidnapped while returning from school. Rustom Jariwala (#Vinay Pathak) seeks the help of Pragyaparamita Mukhopadhay aka Mitin Mashi (#KoelMallick) for solving this case. Does #MitinMashi accept this case? Does she track down the kidnapper? Is it a plain case of kidnapping or is it a well-planned conspiracy? The answers to all these questions form the crux of the movie.
Direction
#ArindamSil has earned a reputation for making detective films. He has been successfully doing it for several years in the Bengali film industry. His previous two detective franchises '#Byomkesh' and '#Shabar' were massive hits. So, the expectation level was sky-high for #MitinMashi. Fortunately, the director has not disappointed the audience. It was probably the first time that the audience witnessed a female protagonist as a detective on the big screen.
#ArindamSil is an expert when it comes to weaving a detective story. You are certainly mesmerised by the way #ArindamSil has crafted this movie.
The director did not stick to the #MitinMashi character created by novelist #SuchitraBhattacharya. He added his own colours to the character of #MitinMashi and made her livelier on screen. #ArindamSil's Mitin is more confident and sharper than her novel version. She can fight off 4-5 goons single-handedly. Therefore, this movie is an ode to the spirit of womanhood. The message given by the director is that women are not inferior to men in any area. In fact, they are far superior to men in several areas.
The movie also has few shortcomings. The parallel cast is not developed enough. The director has given more emphasis on #MitinMashi than all other characters. The complex plots and subplots which are the heart of detective movies are somewhat missing in this movie. #MitinMashi’s story is presented in an intensely simplified manner. Another prominent drawback of the film is that the antagonist is not at par with the protagonist. As a result, the villain appears weaker compared to the heroine. Despite these drawbacks, #MitinMashi still attempts to keep the audience engaged.
Technical Department
The cinematography by #SubhankarBhar is worthy of appreciation. The film is visually appealing. The editing by #SanglapBhowmik is commendable. This movie is only 1 hour and 47 minutes long. The screenplay is very tight, and keeps the audience hooked to the screen. The chasing sequence at the climax could have been better; but overall #MitinMashi is a technically sound film.
Music and Background Score
Credit must be given to music director #BickramGhosh for trying to blend music in the narrative. #RashidAliKhan's Indian classical music has been beautifully used in the movie and background score is also very appealing.
Performances
Before the release of the movie, the audience were doubtful whether #KoelMallick would do justice to the lead character 'Mitin Mashi'. Koel has silenced all her critics with a stellar performance. She embraced her character just as the fish embraces water. This film will certainly be remembered as one of Koel's career-best performances.
#SubhrajitDutta, who played the role of Mitin’s husband, did a decent job. Tupur (#RiyaBanik), as the side-kick of #MitinMashi, was impressive. Vinay Pathak was at his usual best. Rest of the cast did a fine job as well.
WMR Verdict
'#MitinMashi' is a perfect movie to watch with your family this festive season. The director has tried to tell a story of a female detective who is just like a girl next door. This story will inspire teenage girls to train themselves for all situations in life, be it cooking at home or fighting goons in hostile environments.
The movie is a tribute to the various forms of womanhood. #MitinMashi has all the potential to be a successful franchise and we anticipate a sequel to this movie in years to come.
