Made In China: Movie Review

In 2016, a Gujarati film called #WrongSideRaju became a cult hit and also received the coveted national award for the best film in Gujarati that year. It was directed by #MikhilMusale. This week he came up with his first Hindi venture #MadeInChina. Will he again succeed or fail this time? Let’s analyse.

Synopsis

#MadeInChina tells the story of an Ahmedabad-based Gujarati businessman Raghuvir Mehta (#RajkummarRao) who does various businesses but fails every time. Finally, he comes across a secret formula which has the potential to change his life forever. Does the formula help him succeed in life or does it bring misery to his life? The answer to this question forms the crux of the movie.

Direction

#MikhilMusale has a typical style of narrating a film. Both his films (#WrongSideRaju and #MadeInChina) have a similar pattern of storytelling which is not only entertaining but also gives a social message. His direction is awesome.

Technical Department

The story, screenplay, and editing are somewhat weak especially in the first half where few scenes seem forced but the film picks up pace in the second half. The music in the film has a distinctive Gujarati flavour to it, but the songs seem misplaced in the narrative. This film would have created more impact if there were no songs at all. Both the background music and cinematography are average.

Performances

#RajKummarRao is chameleon! Give him any role of any calibre, and he will paint himself in that colour. He cakewalks over any role effortlessly. The film rests on his shoulders, and he again gives his best. His Gujarati mannerisms, his accent, and even his body language are bang on target. #MouniRoy is pretty but seems a total mismatch for this role. She does not resemble a Gujarati housewife at all. #PareshRawal and #GajrajRao are decent in their cameos. The other pillar of the film is the ever-so-talented #BomanIrani. It’s a treat to watch this actor depicting a variety of roles. He perfectly suits his character to the T and delivers an extraordinary speech in the climax. What a terrific actor! Rest of the cast is also good.

WMR Verdict

#MadeInChina is a good one-time watch movie but considering its adult content in terms of the product endorsed it may not drive family audience much.
