Laal Kaptaan: Movie Review

Revenge dramas are made all over the world from time of an eternity. This week’s latest release #LaalKaptaan also follows the same age-old revenge story. Does it succeed or falter? Let’s analyse

Synopsis

#LaalKaptaan tells a story of a Naga Sadhu Gossain (#SaifAliKhan) whose only aim in life is to take revenge from Rehmat Khan (#ManavVij). Who is Rehmat Khan? Why is Gossain targeting Rehmat Khan? Why does Gossain want to take revenge? Is he successful in his endeavour? The answers to all these questions form the crux of the movie.

Direction

In 2007, debutant director #NavdeepSingh made one of the best noir thrillers #ManoramaSixFeetUnder starring #AbhayDeol. His next film #NH10 was also quite good, and it had probably one of the best performances by #AnushkaSharma. Unfortunately, #NavdeepSingh is totally out of form in his current directorial venture. The film looks like jumbled episodes of a web series which totally confuse the audience regarding the proceedings of the film. The direction is totally uninspiring, and it looks as if the makers are themselves confused as to what they want to show. This is #NavdeepSingh’s worst film to date!!

Technical Department

The biggest flaw of the film is its script and faulty screenplay. The film is so confusing that you literally start yawning after some time. Scenes proceed without any explanation, and the climax reveals the true reason behind Gossain wanting to kill Rehmat. Unfortunately, it’s too late till then. The damage to the film seems irreparable to this stage. The screenplay is totally boring and takes the audience in a sleepy mode. Editing is another area of concern with this film. The film is too long and needed to be short by at least 30 minutes. The music in the film is strictly average. Cinematography is good. The locales and old India during the British Raj are captured beautifully.

Performances

The film rests completely on #SaifAliKhan’s shoulders and he does not disappoint at all. Saif gives one of his career-best performances. We feel bad that although Saif chose to play a unique character for the movie, he was let down by a faulty script. #DeepakDobriyal has given some wonderful comic moments in the movie. He is superb in his role. #ManavVij, as the main antagonist, is convincing and his menacing eyes look great on screen. #SimoneSingh is passable. #ZoyaHussain does a wonderful job. #SonakshiSinha is wasted in the cameo role.

WMR Verdict

Another ideal example of the proverb: All that glitters is not gold. A totally confusing and boring script which makes this film an avoidable affair. Sensational performances by the lead cast including #SaifAliKhan. Sadly the story couldn't live up to the calibre of the performing artists. Definitely worth a miss!!
