Illegal (Voot Select): Webseries Review

Introduction

ILLEGAL, directed by cinematographer-turned-director #SahirRaza,is a taut and gripping court-room thriller that explores the dark underbelly of the legal eco-system. Starring #NehaSharma, #AkshayOberoi, #PiyushMishra and #SatyadeepMishra in pivotal roles, the 10-episode series, centers on a rape-case investigation procedure and also examines the dynamics of intricate human relationships and moral values.

Synopsis

#NehaSharma plays Niharika Singh, a ballsy lawyer who reluctantly shifts from her hometown, Bangalore to New Delhi after she is hired by the numero-uno law firm headed by Janardan Jaitley (#PiyushMishra)  and is assigned the high-profile case to defend the rich and entitled brat, Neeraj Shekhawat (#RohitGupta) who is accused of rape. Little does she know that Akshay(#AkshayOberoi), her ex-flame, happens to be the son of Janardan Jaitley working in the same firm and a bottle-friend of Neeraj.

Constantly pricked by her conscience for protecting the alleged rapist with a misplaced sense of entitlement and masculinity, Niharika also has to deal with the maneuvering methods adopted by the legal vultures and her decaying personal equations in the corporate space.

Interesting things unfold in the narrative which keep you hooked throughout the series.

Direction and Screenplay

Director Raza and writer Reshu Nath (of #ALTBalaji’s Bose: Dead Or Alive fame) effectively build layers of intrigue around the focal plot of the investigation. Niharika’s vitriolic dynamics with her estranged father, her damaged relationship with Akshay, and a parallel case involving multiple murders are all well-tackled, if not deep-dived.

The episodes are intense and racy, without any space for humour. The screenplay is particularly tight and adorned with razor-sharp dialogues, very much in sync with the legalese.

Performances

#Illegal benefits enormously from its well-researched characters and Raza extracts superlative performances from his lead cast. At the helm of affairs is #NehaSharma, playing the protagonist with an unmistakable commitment. Her Niharika is bold, brutally honest and vulnerable at the same time and Sharma shapes her up with a realized arc.

Complimenting her in many frames is the underrated #AkshayOberoi who plays the layered character with a great finesse. #PiyushMishra plays the suave and diabolic legal monarch with a flair in his digital debut and the talented #SatyadeepMishra plays his rival who was once his protégé.

They are also surrounded with a  splendid supporting ensemble – #KubbraSait plays the feisty Meher Salam, a prisoner in solitary confinement sentenced for execution and Kitu Gidwani plays the paranoid wife of Janardan convincingly to a great extent. #RohitGupta, #ParulGulati, #VickyArora and #DeepakTijori do adequate justice to their respective parts.

Wise Movie Reviews Verdict

On the whole , #Illegal keeps you absolutely riveted and I strongly recommend you binge-watch it. The ending strongly suggests for the next season and I just can’t wait for it.
