Off late, stories with rural backdrops are finding a new lease of life in Hindi cinema. Especially, Uttar Pradesh is being used as a backdrop to depict gangster kind of stories. Family of Thakurganj narrates a tale of one such family. Does this family entertain or torture us? Let’s analyse.
Family of Thakurganj tells the story of a family whose eldest son Nannu (Jimmy Shergill) takes responsibility of the household after the death of his father. Nannu indulges in illegal activities during the process. How he tries to change himself for good and what situation he faces in between form the crux of the story. If you try to search for more content, you will need a microscope.
Direction: Direction is a big letdown here. The film is inconsistent, and the characters are introduced haphazardly with no proper background. The director seems immature to handle this film. Manoj K. Jha, unfortunately, has been a big letdown as the captain of the ship.
Technical departments: Cinematography by Yogesh Jani is strictly average. Editing by Chandrashekhar Prajapati is inconsistent; it does not match the smoothness of the screenplay. The story of the film is good, but the poor editing spoils the presentation. It's shocking that veteran writer DIlip Shukla wrote such an inconsistent and lethargic screenplay that lacks a vision.
Background score and music: Both departments serve disappointment. Background score is a big letdown, and songs only hamper the flow of the story. None of the songs are memorable.
Performances: Family of Thakurganj is a classic case study example of how a director and writer ended up wasting the best talents of the industry! The film comprises of a long list of noted actors of Bollywood. The director should have tried to capitalize on the strength of his actors; however, all he managed was a spoiled broth. Jimmy Shergill, Nandish Singh, Yashpal Sharma, and Saurabh Shukla shine amongst rest of the star cast. The film takes a breath of fresh air when (after getting bored completely in the pre-interval period) you see the talented Pawan Malhotra make an appearance. Unfortunately, even he is handicapped by a flawed screenplay.
Recently, we watched a wonderful performance of Nandish Singh in Super 30, and here also he does not disappoint. It’s very sad to see veterans, such as Manoj Pahawa, Mahie Gill, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Mukesh Tiwari, Raj Zutshi, and Sudhir Pandey being wasted owing to a weak screenplay. The makers lost an excellent opportunity to make a decent commercial film.
WMR Verdict:
In spite of having all the best talents of the industry, Family of Thakurganj doesn’t seem to last long at the box office due to its flawed screenplay and poor editing. It’s better to avoid watching this film in the theatre.
WMR Rating: 2.0/5.0
(1 for Jimmy Shergill and 1 for Nandish Singh)
