Dream Girl: Movie Review

Synopsis

The trailer of the movie created a huge buzz as #AyushmannKhurana chose to play the role of 'Pooja'. Not many actors in Bollywood would have taken that risk. However, #AyushmannKhurana's choice of script has always been good so far in his career and this film has also worked well in most of the parts. So, without wasting much time, let's move into the story of '#DreamGirl'.

After being jobless for a long time, #AyushmannKhurana's character Karamveer Singh (Karam) takes up a job at the 'friendship' call centre as 'Pooja'. Karam's female voice is so attractive that the followers of Pooja increase day by day. However, Karam's family members have no idea about his job. Even his girlfriend Mahi (#NushratBharucha) is unaware of this fact.

Does Karam’s identity get disclosed? Does Karam get entangled due to his own decision? Do Karam’s family members and his girlfriend come to know about Pooja? The answers to all these questions form the crux of the movie.

Direction

#RaajShaandilyaa made his directorial debut with this film. Previously, he was famous for writing the content of the hilarious TV show '#ComedyNightswithKapil'. In his debut directorial film, #RaajShaandilyaa utilized his gift of presenting pure humour and the audience would certainly laugh throughout the whole movie. The comedy depicted in this film does not belong to the category of slapstick comedy; neither does it have any adult content. The director completely used the tool of situational comedy (similar to #Priyadarshan) and it worked well.

There are few moments in the film wherein you may feel that this film lacks a soul.

The first half is really engaging; however, the second half is a little long and the comedy scenes seem quite repetitive. The director has not given much time to develop the love story of Karam and Mahi. That angle of the film could have been extended a bit. So, it becomes difficult for the audience to connect with the love story of Karam and Mahi.

The comic timing of the actors and dialogues is so good that you will laugh your hearts out. One of the biggest positives of this film is its climax wherein all the lead characters come together and the film ends on a hilarious note. The audience will certainly leave the hall with a broad smile on their face.

Technical Department

The cinematography is good. The editing of the second half could have been better. The screenplay of the movie has also worked quite well. It never slows down the tempo of the hilarious comedy film.

Music and Background Score

Two songs of the film - '#RadheRadhe' and '#DilKaTelephone' completely matched with the theme of the movie. The other two songs, the love track #IkMulaqat and #DhagalaLagali, did not go with the screenplay and it seemed to be forcefully placed in the movie.

Performances

The film has completely focused on #AyushmaanKhurana's character 'Pooja' and the versatile actor again proves his class in the film. Ayushmaan had taken a huge challenge of essaying the role of 'Pooja' at this point in his career; but he ended up smashing all the balls out of the park with his splendid performance.

The supporting cast also pulled off a great performance in the film. Kudos should be given to #VijayRaaz, #AbhishekBanerjee, and #AnnuKapoor for their fabulous acting in this film. Their tuning with the script resonated at the same frequency at which Ayushmann was acting. This factor took the level of their performances to the next level. The famous TVF girl #NidhiBisht also utilized her screen time very well in this film.

Ayushmann’s Pooja takes centrestage as the actual heroine of the film, leaving even #NushratBharucha behind in the fray. The “#PyaarkaPunchnama” girl tries her best to perform well in her extended cameo role.

WMR Verdict

#DreamGirl is not a film without flaws, and it may not show up in the list of the best movies of #AyushmaanKhurana. The writer-director #RaajShaandilyaa has been able to produce a complete laugh riot that people will love to watch in the theatres. This film will certainly be a hit at the box office, and it might enjoy a smooth run till the release of '#War' on 2nd October.

WMR Rating: 3.5/5 (Extra 0.5 for the great performance of the actors in this film.)
