Synopsis

It is a web series based on the rise of a self-proclaimed Baba and his Aashram. The self-proclaimed Baba has taken advantage of the superstitious beliefs of common people and built his own empire. The web series will show how a big nexus operates in the background of an Aashram. This show not only showcases the activities taking place inside the Aashram but also enters every part of the system in India involving politics and casteism.

Direction and Script Analysis

Directed by Prakash Jha, this web series delves deep into the evil side of the system. The makers have tried to enlighten the audience about how the common people get exploited by the self-proclaimed Godmen. The web series certainly makes a statement against the fake Babas. However, the makers should be appreciated for not hurting the feelings of any specific religion. The makers have planned the show on a grand scale. Unfortunately, the execution fails to touch the same level at all points of the series. The screenplay is quite engaging, but too many subplots might distract the audience in the middle episodes. The writing of the show has worked quite well and that's a big plus for this web series.

Performances

Bobby Deol is playing the lead character in this web series. The makers haven’t given him enough space to show his class in the first season; rather they have saved the best of him for the second season. His performance can well be the USP of the show in the next part. Bobby Deol is looking quite convincing as 'Nirala Baba'. His expressions and dialogue delivery are apt for the character and that's why the audience will be able to connect with him quite easily.

The best part of this show will certainly be the performances of the whole cast. Chandan Roy Sanyal (Bhopa Ji) as Baba's assistant has been brilliant throughout the nine episodes of the show. Aaditi Pohankar has been quite a revelation. After a top-notch performance in the web series 'She' (Netflix), Aaditi has nailed it once again with her simplicity and uniqueness. The same can be said about Darshan Kumaar too. After 'Avrodh', Darshan Kumaar has marked his presence on the digital screen quite well. Tushar Pandey, Anupria Goyenka, Tridha Choudhury, Rajeev Siddhartha and Sachin Shroff have been a perfect fit for their respective roles. The character of Adhyayan Summan has been introduced late in the show, and we can assume that he will play an important role in the next part of the web series. The performances of the lead cast will certainly keep the audience intrigued throughout the nine episodes.

Technical Departments

Editing

The editing of the show could have been crisper. The subplots have slowed down the pace of the show and few unnecessary scenes could have been trimmed easily. However, the engaging screenplay has been the saving grace of the show despite some glitches in the editing.

Production Design and Cinematography

The production design and cinematography of the show are praiseworthy. The grandeur of the show is certainly one of its highlights. Background Music The background music has worked quite well for the show, especially the entry song of the 'Baba'. The use of background music in specific scenes is also quite apt throughout the web series.

Our Verdict

'Aashram' is a web series which should be in your watch list for its uniqueness. There are not many web series on this subject, and the making is also quite commendable. A must-watch web series as the audience can connect with it easily.
