A Perfect Murder: Marathi Play Review

Updated: May 22, 2019

A #play is majorly carried on the shoulders by the actors performing in it; however, how much weight they carry might vary with every performance.

May be that is why in #Marathi they call a play as a प्रयोग (experiment).

We all have grown up reading detective novels, watching detective serials, and relishing detective films as well.

For the first time, we have an opportunity to witness an adaptation of Sir Alfred Hitchcock's work presented beautifully in the form of a Marathi play "A Perfect Murder".

The credit must go to the writer Neeraj Shirvaikar for using the original plot and fine tuning it into a revised story incorporating the characters of our present times. The story is shown to take place in the city of Mumbai.

Veteran director Vijay Kenkare has done complete justice to the writing with well-directed scenes. However, the actual points are scored by the performers of this play.

Niranjan (Pushkar Shrotri) is a retired first- class cricketer. His wife Meera essayed by Shweta Pendse has a past she wants to forget and dedicate herself to her husband in the present. Abhijit Kelkar plays Divyajeet who is writer by profession and represents the third part of this triangle.

There are two more major roles. One of them is enacted by Satish Rajwade (although he appears in the second half, he will leaves a long-lasting impression on the audience). The other role played by Subodh Pande is pivotal to the narrative.

A perfect plan for murder is plotted.

Who plans the murder? What is the motive behind plotting the murder? Is the plan successful? Does the murder occur?

The answers to all these questions form the heart of the play. It is certainly an edge-of-the-seat thriller. As an audience, you will surely be captivated by the proceedings occurring in front of your eyes.

It is amazing to see both Pushkar and Satish, who have directed full length feature films, get into the skin of their respective characters. It is their onstage chemistry that will hook you to the play completely. Shweta Pendse (who is a popular actress in TV serials) has done a commendable job as well.

If you are an avid fan of suspense stories, you might guess the mystery a little earlier than others; however, it won't dampen your experience of watching the play even a little bit.

A big shout to the background score, and the song 'Savalya' that plays at the start.

Play: A Perfect Murder - A thrilling adaption of Sir Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece!

Director: Vijay Kenkre

Writer: Neeraj Shirvaikar

Cast: Satish Rajwade, Aniket Vishwasrao, Pushkar Shrotri, Shweta Pendse, Abhijit Kelkar, Subodh Pande

Run-time: 2:30 Hrs

P.S. The same play is also performed by Aniket Vishwasrao playing Niranjan and Pushkar playing the role by Satish. My experience with the original cast was slightly better.
